Abstract

Introduction: Sleepiness is a condition that has a negative effect on motor andc ognitive performance. In this study, sociodemographic characteristics of taxi drivers and their effects on daytime sleepiness conditions and the relationship between traffic accidents and daytime sleepiness were aimed. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 160 taxi drivers participated in the survey. The questionnarie that including the sociodemographic characteristics, working conditions, healthy lifestyle behaviors, body mass index (BMI), previous traffic and work accidents, perceived Health status of the participants, Eppworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ)-12 were used. Descriptive and univariate analyzes as well as correlations and linear regression analyzes were performed. Results: All drivers are male and average age is 44.9 ± 10.9. 88% of drivers rated their perceived health as good -too good. The frequency of those who have traffic accidents is 66.2% and the frequency of those who have occupational accidents is 68,1%. The mean of the ESS scores is 2.7 ± 2.4. There were statistically significant correlations between ESS scores and alcohol consumption amounts, traffic accidents, number of work accidents, number of nightwork, BMI, GHQ-12 scores. Correlation coefficients were 0.19, 0.26, 0.27, 0.27, 0.30, 0.30 respectively. The mean score of the ESS was 3.10 ± 2.66 for those who had an accident and 1.96 ± 1.75 for those who did not (p=0.007). Conclusion: In this study, daytime sleepiness was associated with traffic accidents. In addition, drivers' working conditions and healthy lifestyle behaviors affect sleepiness. The arrangement of the working hours of the drivers and the promotion of healthy life behaviors may mitigate the daytime sleepiness. In this way, traffic accidents and occupational accidents can be reduced.
