Abstract

Gender equality is the idea that individuals of any gender should have equal rights and opportunities in both public and private settings. This article summarises data from the Global Gender Gap Report (GGGR) 2024.

For all 146 countries in the GGGR 2024, only 68.5 per cent of the gender gap has been closed and it is estimated that global gender equality can be achieved in 134 years. Although no country has reached full equality yet, Iceland is the country that has closed gender inequality the most with a score of 93.5%. An analysis of the sub-indices reveals that gender inequalities have largely closed in the areas of health and survival and access to education. However, significant gaps remain in economic participation and opportunities and political empowerment.

While Turkey ranked 105th in the GGGR in 2006, it ranks 127th in 2024 and last in the European region. Among the 40 countries in the region, Turkey is the only country where less than 50% of gender inequality has been reduced in labor force participation, while 27 countries have achieved more than 80% equality in this indicator.

As a result, the report shows that none of the 146 countries have been able to close gender inequality completely. In order to achieve equality, it is necessary to develop plans and policies that prioritise gender equality. Preventing gender-based violence, making legal arrangements for women to be included more in decision-making mechanisms, supporting women's participation in economic life and increasing political representation are of critical importance in achieving the target.
