Aim: The aim of our study is assessing the sleep quality and the related factors for sleep quality between 18-64 year old individuals residing in two urban and semi-urban areas in Manisa.
Method: The sample size for this cross-sectional study was calculated as 490 individuals. The dependent variables of our study were the sleep quality of individuals between the ages of 18-64. To calculate the data we used the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics such as age, level of education, marrital status, income; also the presence of chronic ilness, the presence of a diagnosed psychiatric ilness, the presence of a diagnosed sleep disorder, presence of smoking and consumption of alcohol, daily intake of tea and coffee, the light and noice presence in the room designated for sleep. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 (Package for the Social Sciences), and the Type I error rate was set at 0.05.
Results: In our study, it is found that %54,7 of the induviduals between the ages of 18-64 had a poor quality of sleep. According to multivariate analyses having a high stress level, being female, having a poor level of comfort from the bed one sleeps in and not being married were identified as risk factors.
Conclusion: More than half of our study group has a poor quality of sleep. In order to improve and reach the ideal level of sleep quality in society, many initiatives should be planned. In all healthcare organisations, especially in primary healthcare settings, prioritizing unmarried individuals and women, sleep hygiene education and recommendations can be provided to raise the knowledge level of individuals, making it possible to improve sleep quality for everyone. This, in turn, can enhance overall productivity in daily life.
