In the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report-2024, it was announced that tuberculosis (TB), the deadliest infectious disease for centuries, has caused one billion deaths in the last 200 years, returned to its former place in the first place in the ranking of causes of death due to single-source infectious disease in 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and that multidrug-resistant TB is still an important public health problem. Wars, migrations, HIV and COVID-19 pandemics, inequalities, inadequate political determination and resource allocations, inadequate research and development activities and problems in managing all these situations have been important factors in the incidence and fatalities of TB. In this review; the course and struggle of TB disease throughout human history is presented chronologically. Scientists and their studies, approaches of country administrations, WHO strategies and practices, United Nations meetings and resolutions that have made significant contributions to the understanding and fight against the disease are summarized. In the fight against tuberculosis, the financing problem in underdeveloped countries where the disease is common, the attitude of the senior leaders of the countries, new screening methods and vaccines, drugs developed in the fight against multidrug resistance are explained.
