Abstract

This study aims to adapt and conduct validity and reliability studies of the Fear of Scabies Scale (FSS-10), developed by Prof. Dr. Sangeeta Singg in the United States, into Turkish. For this purpose, the study scale was administered to 121 patients who attended Aydın/Efeler Family Health Center No. 20, selected using a random sampling method, and agreed to participate. The psychometric properties of the scale were examined through distribution characteristics of scale scores, item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), criterion-related validity, and internal consistency reliability methods. According to the findings of the item analysis, items 8 and 10 were removed as their item-total correlation values were below 0.20, resulting in an increase in Cronbach's Alpha when these items were eliminated. Additionally, based on modification suggestions in confirmatory factor analysis, item 1 was removed, leading to an excellent fit of the scale with a final version consisting of 7 items. Validity and reliability analyses of the scale were conducted using SPSS v25.0 and SPSS AMOS v22.0 software. According to the results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the model with 7 items and 3 dimensions showed good fit values. Factor loadings of the scale ranged between 0.47 and 0.95, explaining 63% of the total variance. In terms of criterion-related validity, the scale demonstrated a significant but weak positive correlation with the Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 (Türkiye Sağlık Okuryazarlığı Ölçeği-32) (TSOY-32). The internal consistency analysis for reliability revealed a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.67 for the entire scale.Based on the research results, it can be stated that the adapted scale in Turkish is a valid and reliable tool for assessing individuals' knowledge and opinions about scabies, their attitudes towards the infection, and their ability to manage the disease, measuring fears of contracting and being seen with the disease.
