Abstract

Nutrition is of vital importance for the beginning and continuation of a healthy life in human life. Achieving growth and development during childhood is possible with adequate and balanced nutrition. The first 8000 days, including the school age, which plays an important role in the development of children; It is important for the formation of nutritional habits, a healthy adulthood, and a reduction in the risk of developing chronic diseases. Providing nutrition at school is of great importance in terms of gaining healthy eating and lifestyle habits, raising awareness of healthy living, and preventing diseases in adulthood. Children get the energy and nutrients they need daily through food. Not eating breakfast and not consuming enough lunch results in chronic malnutrition problems. The consequences of chronic malnutrition include stunting, wasting, obesity, low immunity, micronutrient deficiencies, mental development impairment, anemia and learning disabilities. In the school age period, when children's physiological, psychological and social developments are rapid, their lifelong behaviors are acquired to a large extent. The development of diseases in adulthood can be prevented by providing an adequate and balanced diet during school age, which is the period when they are most suitable to receive information and acquire habits.School nutrition programs are implemented in various parts of the world. In order to ensure rapid growth and development, school nutrition programs are important in terms of creating immunity by creating resistance to diseases, contributing to the development of school success, perception, attention and cognitive abilities, increasing school continuity, and providing learning openness. School nutrition programs increase children's attendance at school, positively affect school success and make children ready to learn. This article includes examples of school feeding programs around the world, starting from primary school to high school, and existing studies in Turkey. The article can be a pioneer for new policies to be developed in Turkey.
